'The Lovely Bones' and 'The Devil Wears Prada' Review

Hey!
I have been reading a few books recently and I have a few thoughts on them.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

I had no idea what to expect from this book. All I knew was that it was a best-seller and was made into a movie. I was so intrigued by the blurb on the back:
My name was Salmon, like the fish; my first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighbourhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer.
The main character is Susie Salmon, a fourteen year old girl who gets murdered by a creepy neighbour. She goes up to heaven and watches down on her family and friends as they grief her death and move on with their lives. In heaven, you can do as you please but all Susie wants to do is to focus on the living world to see if anyone ever figures out who murdered her or where her body is.

I really enjoyed this book, I love the way it was written and very addictive as you want to find out does the neighbour get caught and what happens to Susie's dad. I feel that this book wouldn't suit everyone because it is quite upsetting and unnerving but still an excellent read.

The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

I think everyone at some stage has seen the film version of The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. I love the movie and normally no matter what, the book is better than the movie but for this case I can disagree.

It's not that I didn't like the book, I prefer more character development and a bit more action that what this book gave me. It was nice to read and delve into the world of Runway but it didn't blow me away.

The book is about Andy Sachs who is just after graduating college and goes looking for a job in journalism, she goes to an interview in Runway, which is the most known fashion magazine in the world, for junior assistant as it is a job a million girls would die for to work for Miranda Priestly. Andy gets the job and get put through hell having to work long hours and trying to put up with Miranda's demands.

I was slightly disappointed with this book but I know I prefer fantasy books

Current Wishlist

Hey!
One of my New Years Goals was to save more money and also I am going to Barcelona at the end of April with my year, so I don't have any money burning a hole in my pocket as I'll need it in two months but I can still dream of things I would like to buy. Here's some of those things:

Source

theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer Highlighter (€21.50)

Everyone goes on about this highlighter and I am in love with it. I don't have a nice highlighter at the moment and I feel like this one is a nice product.

Source

Ecotools Smoothing Detangler Brush (€14.99)

I have been using the same hairbrush for two years that I had bought in Primark years ago. I get a lot of tangles in my hair and my hair takes forever to dry when wet and since it says that it dries hair 20% faster, I don't really believe it but I still would love to try it.

Source

NYX Setting Spray - Matte Finish (€10.00)

I have bought this before and I forgot to repurchase. I love how it sets my makeup and just finishes off everything nicely.

Source

The Makeup Chair Handbook (€14.95)

I love Sinead Cady and her YouTube channel, her makeup advice and tutorials are amazing. When I heard she was coming out with a makeup handbook I was so happy but trying to find it is the hard part! I am looking forward to getting it and having lots of inspiration for makeup looks

Source

Canon PowerShot SX410 (€179.99)

At the moment I am using my iPod Touch to take photos, it does a good job but I would love to get a proper camera. I love to take photos and I think this could help make them more crisp. I don't want to dive into DSLRs as there are so many and they are so expensive and this looks like a good first camera.

Source

EcoTools Eye Enhancing Duo Brush Set (€7.49)

I have really been getting into using eye makeup especially eye shadows. I need some proper eye shadow brushes as at the moment I am using Q tips and old makeup brushes I have. I heard of these from one of my favorite YouTubers Melanie Murphy. I have used EcoTools brushes before and I love them.

Source

theBalm Nude 'Tude Eye Shadow Palette (€36.00)

As I have said above, I am really getting into using eye makeup, I would love to invest in a decent eye shadow palette and I love all the colours in Nude 'Tude. I haven't tried out anything from theBalm yet but I have heard it's a nice brand.

Flormar Illuminating Primer Makeup Base (€9.95)

I am always on the look out for a primer that doesn't dry out my skin and I feel this one is a safe bet but the problem is Flormar is so hard to find in Ireland at the moment (its like a treasure hunt!). I really want to try out this product.

What's on your current wishlist?

TY Thursday #7 It has Been a While

Hey!
I know, I know, I haven't done one of these in a while but I have reasons, it's midterm now so I have more time to get things done. Here's a few things that I have been up to:

Work Experience

Since before Christmas I have been working in a Chemist and I thought originally that I wouldn't like it, I thought that I would use this placement to get experience working in a shop but surprisingly I enjoyed everyday of it. I wasn't always on the till, I helped unload stock, I made up prescriptions, I made up blister packs, I learned about what some of the more popular drugs were used for. I was working from 9am -6pm and standing all day. Since I liked it so much, I asked for an extended work placement which I was so grateful they said yes because I feel that this could be possible career for me in the future.

Young Scientist

Every year in my school, TYs go to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition which is a national science exhibition that is held every year. One person in my year was chosen to go up and present his project. I found the whole experience interesting.

Drama

I have started rehearsals for a play I am doing and its called 'The Wedding'. I was asked to be in the play by my Speech & Drama teacher (who also wrote it). The character that I am playing is Mandy, she isn't the most intelligent person in the world because she gate crashes a wedding in a wedding dress! I hope to tell you more about it because it is on the start of April. I also have to sing a duet from Grease 'We Go Together', which will be fun because I love to sing but slightly nerve wrecking because there will be over 500 people watching, I just don't want that to go to my head! This is my first play to do with an adult cast which is so different from having a student cast, it's much more enjoyable and interesting as I am doing it with new people.

Speaking of Speech & Drama, I got my results back from my exam I did before Christmas and I am proud to say I have First Class Honours in Certificate of Speech & Drama. I am so overjoyed with my result because a lot of hard work and effort went into it.

Retreat

We went on a retreat to a local retreat center last week. I enjoyed it as it wasn't all about religion but more about your own personal development. We made friendship bracelets, meditated, talked, played games, laughed and drank lots of tea!

Cookery Course

I went on a cookery course in The Ivy Cookery School, it was very enjoyable as we got to see a demo of what was being made and when that was over we got to try out the three course meal and it was so delicious. We got the recipes which I hope to make in the next few weeks. The recipes are for tomato and roast pepper soup, wholemeal bread, basil pesto, bolognese and fruit crumble.

Driver's Ed

My school planned a day for driver's Ed where we did some driving, theory tests, changing tyres, drunk soccer (we used goggles) and trying to insure a car. I really enjoyed the driving as I had never driven a car before but I hope to soon, once as I get my provisional licence. When I was doing the mock theory test, I failed it which was slightly embarrassing as I passed my theory test in October. The drunk soccer was hilarious as you see double and you don't know which one to hit. I ran into the rails a few times which was funny.

Student Enterprise Awards

My mini company got picked by my school to go to the local Student Enterprise Awards, where we will showcase are product and talk about it. I was so happy to get picked as I had put so much effort into it. The awards day will be at the start of March.

That's all I have been up to!

One Year Blog Anniversary & What's Next

Hey!
On the 11th of February 2015, after a lot of unsatisfaction with my previous blog, I created this blog and now over one year later (367 days), I'm still here!

A lot of bloggers do a giveaway for their blog anniversary, as I am a student I can't afford it but like birthdays we shouldn't always be thinking about all the materialistic things, it should be more focused on the memories and achievements. I did a similar post in December talking about things that happened each month.

Over this past year from feeling like I was the only blogger in the world to now having a few blog friends, my blog has evolved and it will continue evolving as there will always be something to improve on. This past year was me testing the waters for blogging, seeing what I like writing about, learning to take decent photos, participating in Twitter chats and finding my feet in this huge blogging community.

I really enjoyed being able to write about how I felt at certain times, especially with state exams, and write about experiences and things I have done.

A few things I learned from this year of blogging:

  • I'm terrible with HTML but I am willing to try and understand it
  • Try to be at loads of different Twitter chats because if you go to the same one each week it'll mostly be the same people
  • Sometimes you run out of ideas and that's ok
  • Sometimes you have ideas exploding out of your head and that's ok but remember to write them down or you won't have any for when you have no ideas
  • Making blogger friends is a good idea
  • Take 20 photos of the same thing and one will hopefully look good
  • Take photos in daylight hours
  • Organisation is key for both life, school and blogging

As I reflect on this past year of blogging, there are a few things I would like to do:

  • I want to get your opinion on things, there'll be a Readers Survey at the bottom of this post
  • Possibly change day
  • To do another Summer collab blog
  • Do more collabs (I want to do 5 this year)
  • Review more products and books
  • Get to know more bloggers
  • Possibly setting a Facebook page

I am contemplating on changing the day of posting. The reason I had my upload on a Saturday was I used to do everything for that post on Saturday, from taking pictures to writing it. Thankfully I am not like that anymore and I feel like I might want to move on from that stage and to pick another day.

Setting up a Facebook page is another thing I am contemplating on because I know it isn't as popular as the other social media like Twitter, I like the format of it but also (insert dramatic music) Facebook is really popular where I'm going to school and someone might find out about it, which I don't really mind, but I feel it could take a nasty turn because as usual when a classmate finds out you are expressing yourself on the internet, they'll make fun of you and belittle your work. I know this might seem like I'm going round and round of circles but I always want to know the risks of something I am getting myself into. At the moment, only my friends know about my blog or as I call it 'my secret life' and I like it that way.

Thank you for being so kind and letting me be myself. Don't worry, I won't be doing these every year!
See you,

January Favourites 2016

Hey!
January definitely didn't go slow for me, did anyone else find that? Or am I the only one?
As usual with each month comes a monthly favourites but there hasn't been one since October *gasps*. Here is what I have been loving in the past few months.

Entertainment

Back To The Future Movie 30th Anniversary Boxset

My Dad got this as a Christmas present from me and my 2 brothers. He used to go on about how he had only seen the first one and wanted to see the rest. Over Christmas, we watched the three movies and I fell in love with them. The movies are all so funny, creative and well put together, I loved watching them all.

Code Black

When I was on work experience in a chemist before Christmas, I was recommended this show but it hadn't come to any Irish channels so I couldn't watch it. At the start of January, it started on RTÉ. This show is not for the faint hearted, it is set in a hospital that goes into 'code black' (lack of resources to treat all patients) nearly every day. It shows how the new residents learn to cope in this intensive environment. If you like Greys Anatomy, you will like this.

Makeup & Skincare

Cat Eye Eyeliner

If you follow me on Instagram you will know that at the moment I love wearing cat eye eyeliner. I have only mastered the skill in the past few weeks but I like the drama and class it brings to the eyes.

Benetint

I wanted to try out another cheek stain from Rimmel London Stay Blushed (First Impression), I picked this up in the January sales. It looks so natural on my skin and gives me a bit of colour in my cheeks without looking like a clown. I bought this in the set Pucker Up & Party.

Lush Tea Tree Water Toner

I bought this during the Summer but didn't start using it until now as I was trying to use up another toner. It has definitely helped to clear up my skin and to keep it less blemished. I find that a lot of toners dry out my skin but this one doesn't at all. I love using this product.

Fashion

Collar Tops

I have grown to love these tops. I have 3 now, I love how preppy and chic they look and I find they are perfect for the Winter season.

Other

Takamine G Series GN51CE-BSB

I got this for Christmas and I have fallen in love with it and I have finally come up with a name for it 'Spark'. I love the sound and the shape.

What are your January Favourites.

My Favourite 3 Lip Products Collab

IMG_3153[1].JPG

Hey!
This is a collab with Frances from Royally Rouge, I hope you go check out her blog, Twitter and Instagram. Check out her post!
Since I love makeup so much, here are my 3 favourite lip products.

IMG_3155[1].JPG

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Pink in the Afternoon 415

When I bought this lipstick, I fell in love. I normally don't go for very vibrant lip products because I feel they don't suit me but this is perfect as it gives a nice nude looking lip for me. I love the texture of the lipstick, its not too lip glossy and it doesn't feel that you are wearing it. It isn't the most long lasting lipstick but I don't mind reapplying lipstick.

IMG_3157[1].JPG

Natural Collection Moisture Shine Lipstick in Raspberry

For the price this product is amazing, it cost €2.79. I love everything about it except the rather terrible packaging that has caused the lipstick to snap off twice. Apart from that, I love the colour and the pigmentation.

IMG_3159[1].JPG

Rimmel London Colour Rush Balm in On Fire

This is probably one of the 1st red(ish) lip product I bought back when I used to be a pinky lip person. Weirdly enough this product smells amazing, I feel like it smells like chocolate. I love the way it can be sheer or bold.
